About the award

The EUIPO Youth IP Awareness Award recognises teams that demonstrate a sound understanding of Intellectual Property (IP) protection and the ability to develop and apply a strategy to safeguard their business’ innovations and creativity, turning them into commercial value and success.

Teams are not required to have formally registered IP rights but should demonstrate awareness of how IP can be used to protect and strengthen their innovation.

Criteria

Understanding of Intellectual Property Protection (35%): Does the team demonstrate knowledge of IP rights (trademarks, designs, geographical indications, copyright, patents) and to what extent does it identify which types are relevant to their business?

Strategic Planning (35%): To what extent has the team identified which aspects of their business, product, service, or brand could benefit from IP protection and considered steps to protect them as part of an IP strategy, including considering how to check existing rights and monitor potential conflicts using relevant databases (e.g. TMView and DesignView)?

Commercial Value (30%): Does the team articulate how protection of their IP assets create value for their business (e.g. improved reputation, competitive advantage, market positioning, building trust with customers or investors)? Does the team also consider possible opportunities such as access to funding, partnerships, licensing, or IP-backed finance?
